Background

The story of Free! begins with Rin's return to Iwatobi, Japan. While walking through the halls of the old Iwatobi Swim Club building, he meets Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Nagisa Hazuki, who are all surprised to see him. Haruka and Rin are rivals, constantly competing to see who is the best swimmer. Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa decide to reform the Iwatobi Swim Club, with Rin subsequently joining the Samezuka Academy Swim Team to compete against them. Free! Eternal Summer Rin is named captain of the swim team after one of his teammates, Seijuro Mikoshiba, graduates from Samezuka Academy. Rin Matsuoka is a very passionate young man, who displays great competitive spirit and teamwork on the Samezuka Academy Swim Team. As the series progresses, his desire to compete and win against Haruka Nanase grows, eclipsing all other desires.
