Sailor Moon: The Pretty Soldier (often abbreviated as Sailor Moon) is a manga and anime series that aired on television in the 1990s. Naoko Takeuchi created the series about a middle school girl named Usagi Tsukino (Serena in the original DiC dub), who discovers that she is actually a magical warrior named Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon and four other Sailor Guardians: Sailor Venus, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter, unite to defend Earth from evil. The original series consists of 200 episodes, three feature films, five specials, and five recap episodes called memorials. After the original anime series aired, there were two reboots: a live-action TV show and later Sailor Moon Crystal.

Sailor Moon has gained worldwide popularity. Initially, the anime was only scheduled to air for six months, but as it became a national phenomenon, the series was extended and aired for five years. Sailor Moon won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1993.

The Black Moon arc focuses on the five Sailor Soldiers and their fight against Queen Metealia and the Black Moon Clan. Sailor Pluto, Chibusa, and the Black Lady are main characters in the series and also appear in the musical. The musical was written and directed by Takuya Hiramitsu. The musical was performed in Tokyo and Osaka from August 21 to September 7, 2015.
