Vinsmoke Sanji is best known as the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece. He is the fifth member of the crew and the fourth to join, at the end of the Baratie Arc. Today, Sanji is an indispensable part of Luffy's crew and, over the decades, has displayed incredible powers and abilities. But what is the source of these powers and abilities? Is Sanji superhuman? Vinsmoke Sanji is a normal human with extraordinary skills and abilities, but he is neither a cyborg nor a genetically enhanced human. His father, Vinsmoke Judge, wanted to genetically modify Sanji and his two brothers, who were all born on the same day, to be perfect emotionless superhuman soldiers, but their mother drank a drug to counteract this, although it only worked on Sanji, meaning he is the only "normal" human among the Vinsmoke triplets.

Is Sanji a cyborg or a genetically enhanced human?

To give you a proper answer to this question, we really need to talk about the Vinsmoke family and the circumstances of Sanji's birth and childhood. This is the only way to properly explain what Sanji is, what he was meant to be, and why his father's twisted ideals—thankfully—never came true, at least not in his case.

Sanji lived in the Germa Kingdom with his three brothers, Vinsmoke Reiju, and his father, Vinsmoke Judge. Judge genetically modified her sons while they were still in their mother's womb to give them superhuman strength and agility, but when Judge opposed it, she gave him a drug to reverse these effects. However, the drug severely damaged his health, and this sacrifice only affected Sanji, so he became the only normal human. There was a power gap between him and his brothers, which emerged when Judge gave them tests to assess their abilities: running, swimming, fighting, Sanji was always last, by a wide margin.

This made him the black sheep, and the situation worsened when, once his father asked him to train more, Sanji preferred cooking to improving himself. His passion for cooking stemmed from going to see his sick mother prepare the dishes she loved. Throughout his childhood in the Germa Kingdom, he was beaten by his brothers under the encouragement of Reiju and his father. His father concluded that Sanji was a cannonball and, to make royalty look good, made Sanji look dead.

Sanji was locked in a cell for six months with an iron mask covering his face. When the Germa Kingdom reached the East Blue, Reiju helped Sanji escape but was spotted by his father. Surprisingly, his father let him go on the condition that he be permanently disowned by the Vinsmoke family. Sanji then infiltrated the Hobbit, a kitchen ship. He worked there for two years until the age of 10. He didn't always get enough to eat despite the other cooks' recommendations, he didn't want to, and refused to eat customers' leftovers. The ship was attacked by the Redfoot pirate Zeff and his crew. At the end of this voyage, a storm arose and Zeff saved little Sanji from certain drowning.

The two found themselves on an isolated rock. Zeff decided to share the food rations with Sanji. He gave him a small portion and kept most of the bag for himself. Despite Sanji's protests, Zeff went to the other side of the rock to watch for a boat. This isolation transformed Sanji, who was adept at wasting food, into someone who economized on his rations and realized the terror of hunger. After finishing his rations, he decided, after a difficult dilemma, to join Zeff on the other side of the rock to ask for food.

He then realizes that Zeff tore off his right leg to permanently end his pirate career and also to have something to eat since the bag that Zeff had kept only contained treasures, Sanji had all the remaining food. In the manga version, the violence of the act deemed shocking for children watching the anime version will be censored. Zeff will share his dream of opening a restaurant boat since they were finally rescued after eighty-five days on this rock. From this ordeal, Sanji will never refuse to feed anyone, whether poor or wicked.

He also started smoking at a young age to prove his maturity to Zeff. He would later work on the Baratie, a restaurant boat run by Zeff and her cooks. The latter was not against the arrival of a cook, but Zeff refused because it would imply that she would have to be beaten to correct her, except that Zeff simply refused: hitting a woman is the worst thing a woman can do to a man, and he told Sanji that if he scratches a woman, he will come and cut off her head. Why did Vinsmoke Judge want to improve his sons?

Well, aside from the obvious reason mentioned above (creating perfect soldiers with superpowers and no emotions), there's a very important context as to why Vinsmoke Judge actually wanted to experiment with his sons. It actually has to do with some core Vinsmoke family ideals, namely their desire for scientific progress, which we'll explain now.

Namely, the Vinsmoke have advanced technology that they typically use in battle. Their army also uses this technology, which is so advanced that it intrigues Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors. Each member of the family wears advanced equipment called a Raid Suit during battle, allowing them to jump great distances, glide through the air, and increase the power of their kicks. Raid Suits are stored in tiny boxes labeled with each Vinsmoke's assigned number (the judge includes the letter "J" as a marking) when not in use.

When pressed, the cartridges cause the suit's materials to spin, making them completely fireproof and adapting to the wearer's body shape. Along with other genetic modification technologies that have granted the family's offspring superhuman abilities, the Vinsmokes have also invented cloning technology, which they have used to produce a nearly indestructible army. Despite cloning being illegal, Judge has managed to retain the trust of the World Government by either doing them a huge favor or keeping a top secret.

Many Vinsmoke followers display unwavering loyalty and obedience. Without hesitation, they always sacrifice their lives for their rulers, and when forced to do so, they usually follow the "Wall" order, which instructs them to protect their commander by acting as a shield if they are "in danger" of an attack. . the opponent steps in front of them.
