Vinsmoke Sanji is best known as the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates in Oda's One Piece manga. He is the fifth member of the crew and the fourth to join, at the end of the Baratie Arc. Today, Sanji is an indispensable part of Luffy's crew and, over the decades, he has participated in some dangerous missions carried out by the Straw Hats, some of them potentially fatal. Now, in this article, we will briefly tell you Sanji's story and tell you if he dies in One Piece, that is, if he is dead or alive.

Will Sanji die in One Piece?

Sanji is the fourth child of the Vinsmoke family, who treated him quite cruelly; that's why he decided to become a pirate, a dangerous profession that put him in many life-threatening situations.

Abused by his brothers and disowned by his father after his mother's death, Sanji decided to run away and, with the help of his sister Reiju, boarded a ship as a cook's assistant. Some time later, the ship was attacked by Zeff's pirates. Due to a storm, Sanji fell into the water, and Zef dove into the sea to save him, landing on a rock. Here, Zef gave the boy a bag that, according to him, contained a third of the food he had managed to collect during his stay. He would keep the rest.

After seventy days without food, Sanji decided to steal the pirate's food, discovering that his bag was filled with gold and jewels and that he had amputated and eaten his leg to survive. Zeff then revealed why he had saved him: they both dreamed of finding the All Blue, a legendary stretch of sea where all kinds of fish are found. Rescued, they decided to open a floating restaurant together, the Baratie, and Zeff taught Sanji how to fight with kicks to save his hands for cooking on his own.

Years later, the newborn Straw Hat Pirates arrive at Baratie, including Captain Monkey D. Luffy, swordsman Roronoa Zoro, thief Nami, and sharpshooter Usopp. At the same time, Gin arrives at the restaurant, second in command of the Creek Fleet, who is on the verge of starvation after Drakule Mihawk decimated the Long Line fleet.

Gin gave his life in gratitude to save Sanji from Creek's poison gas. However, he was defeated by Luffy during the battle, even though Sanji had decided to feed the pirate and take his captain to the restaurant to steal the restaurant ship. Sanji then thanked Zeff for taking care of him until then and joined Luffy and his friends as a cook. He managed to reach the Grand Line and met Arlong's crew and the naval captain, Smoker, with the help of his new friends.

There, they meet the princess of Alabasta, Nefertari Vivi, who discovers that her kingdom has been targeted by members of the Fleet of Seven Crocodiles. Once in Alabasta, the crew, joined by the ship's doctor, Tony Chopper, collides with the Baroque Works, an organization led by Crocodile: specifically, Sanji confronts and defeats Mr. 2.

After the adventure on Skypiea Island, where they confronted Enel and the Foxy Pirates, Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy tried to stop Marine Admiral Aokiji from attempting to capture Nico Robin, an archaeologist and former right-hand man of Crocodile who had joined the crew in the meantime. When Robin was later kidnapped by CP9, the crew, accompanied by the cyborg Franky, attacked Enel's Lobby Island to free her. After neutralizing the cook Wanze on the sea train, Sanji was neutralized once on the island by Califa, refusing to hit a woman, and then recovered and eliminated Jabura.

Following this, the Navy places a bounty on his head, but instead of a photo, he is represented by a drawing that bears little resemblance to him. At Thriller Bark, the crew encounters the skeleton musician Brook and runs into Gekko Moria's crew. Sanji confronts Absalom and then attempts to sacrifice himself in Zoro's place to protect Luffy from Orso Bartholomew, but his companion neutralizes him.

On the Sabaody Archipelago, after meeting the mermaid Kayme, he encounters Duval, a bounty hunter whose face is identical to the photo on Sanji's wanted poster: despite Duval's attempts to kill him, he manages to defeat him by changing his characteristics. After Luffy attacks a world noble in defense of Kayme, they are attacked by Admiral Kizaru and again by Bartholomew, who sends the members to various parts of the world. Sanji ends up in Momoiro, where he meets Emporio Ivankov, who, having learned that he is a comrade of Luffy, decides to train him for the next two years.

Returning to the Sabaody Islands, Sanji reunites with the crew and, upon arriving on Fish-Man Island, they help foil a conspiracy against the kingdom led by Hody Jones and his pirates. Once in the New World, they land at Punk Hazard, where they team up with the Heart Pirates led by Trafalgar Law to overthrow Emperor Kaido.

Here, they capture the scientist Caesar Clown, a producer of artificial devil fruits and protégé of Donquijote Do Flamingo, who makes his fortune by selling these fruits on the black market, particularly to Kaido. They also encounter the samurai Kin'emon and Momonosuke, who join them. At Dressrosa, after escaping Doflamingo, Sanji, Nami, Brook, and Chopper are attacked by Empress Big Mom's ship, forcing them to temporarily separate from the crew.

The four head to Zou, where they encounter the Mink Tribe: here, Sanji is kidnapped by Capone Bege, a member of Big Mom's crew, to force him to marry Charlotte Pudding, daughter of the Empress, to ally with the Charlotte family and the Vinsmoke. At first, Sanji, after an altercation with Luffy, agrees to the union on the condition that his companions, who arrived on Whole Cake Island to rescue him, can sail safely; however, when he learns that this marriage is a farce to eliminate all the Vinsmokes, Sanji asks his captain for help and receives it.

Through Jinbe's mediation, they then join forces with Bege to eliminate Big Mom at the wedding. After thwarting the Vinsmoke's plan to eliminate them, they are forced to withdraw due to the failure of Bege's plan. Miraculously escaping the Empress, they arrive at Wano Country, Kaido's headquarters. There, they discover the truth about Kin'emon and his companions' origins and learn the story of Kozuki Oden.

Reunited, the Straw Hat Pirates and the samurai attack Onigashima, home of Kaido's crew: here, Sanji, after being briefly captured by Black Maria and freed by Robin, confronts and neutralizes Queen thanks also to the manifestation of the genetic modifications made to the Vinsmoke by the judge. Sanji played a major role in the defeat of the two emperors, Big Mom and Kaido, in Wano Country, after which he continued their journey with Luffy. As you can see, Sanji has had several dangerous encounters over the years, but he survived them all and is still very much alive.
