Is Shanks a member of the Figarland family and what is his last name?
Is Shanks a member of the Figarland family and what is his last name?

Everyone knows that Shanks is one of the best characters in Oda's One Piece series. And even though Shanks's story hasn't been fully revealed yet, recent events in the series are slowly leading up to some big revelations regarding one of the franchise's best and most popular characters. This article will discuss some of those revelations. Some time ago, as fans of the series know, Shanks visited the Five Elders, which shocked many fans. Oda didn't reveal any additional information, so this situation was largely forgotten. But, with the recent revelations related to Uta and some noble families in the series, this scene has come to the forefront again, and in this article, we may be able to explain it. Namely, this article will reveal whether Shanks is a member of the Figarland family.
So far, it has only been implied and not confirmed that Shanks could be a member of the Figarland family. This was first hinted at in the One Piece: Red movie, and recent events in the manga also strongly suggest that Shanks could, indeed, be a member of this mysterious noble family. However, we'll have to wait a bit for confirmation. As for his last name, that would mean he's actually Figarland Shanks, but we'll have to wait for official confirmation for that as well.
The rest of this article will answer many pertinent questions about Shanks' character and his story. You'll discover everything you want and need to know about the character, as we intend to answer some burning and interesting questions that have recently arisen in the series. If you're not familiar with the entire story of One Piece, we must warn you that there will be spoilers in the following paragraphs.
Shanks could very well be a member of the Figarland family
If you remember Shanks… well… not that long ago, even… less than a year ago, you'll probably know that Shanks' full name is – Shanks! Some old fan-created theories on the internet regarding his family suggested that he might have been related to Portgas D. Ace and Gol D. Roger, but Oda hasn't confirmed these theories in the One Piece manga (or anime), but it seems they've finally been disproven, even if it's still just an implication.
So, as far as we know right now (at least until the next chapter comes out), Shanks' full and real name is just Shanks; everything else is just speculation.
But, as we said, these old theories were put to rest by Oda sensei, who implicitly gave us more information about Shanks's past, suggesting that Yonko is not only an important character with an important history, but that he might actually be an important figure in a noble world! Yeah, imagine… Saint Shanks… it's hilarious, but it might be true!
Namely, everyone knows that Roger and his crew found Shanks as a baby in a chest during the God Valley incident. They took him in as one of their own and made him a pirate. As the year went on, Shanks became one of the most powerful and influential characters in the series, which is why fans seem to adore him. But, even though Shanks' reputation speaks for itself all these years, we've never really discovered anything about this great character, and as the manga entered its final saga, it was about time Oda started spilling the beans on Shanks and his story. So, what do we know?
Well, not much, but at least we have some clues now. Namely, some time ago, someone who looked exactly like Shanks, except for the scars, visited the Five Elders, and everyone, including their aunt, was shocked. But when the Knights of God, an elite unit loyal to the World Government, were revealed, with one of their members looking a lot like Shanks, everyone noticed something was wrong.
When the Five Elders mentioned that Uta might be a member of the Figarland family due to his connection (relationship) with Shanks in the One Piece: Red movie, the situation became even more confusing, as their brief remark actually implies that Shanks is connected in some way to the Figarland family. Otherwise, they wouldn't have mentioned this fact. But, at that point, we knew nothing about the Figarland family, and since the movie itself wasn't canon, many fans were skeptical about whether this fact would be relevant to the manga. But it seems that it will be.
Namely, as revealed in recent chapters, the Figarland family will play an important role in the final saga. We discovered that they are a noble family and were among the original 20 nobles who founded the World Government. With this, all the previous questions seem to be answered: if Shanks is indeed a member of the Figarland family, as the Five Elders suggest, it means his relatives are loyal to the World Government, and that explains everything, really.
This explains why Shanks was found during the God Valley incident and why he was found there. As we know, there were worldly nobles on the island. This also explains why Shanks's figure was seen among those of the Knights of God—it wasn't actually Shanks, but one of his relatives who looked a lot like him (perhaps a brother?).
And it seems that it was this same relative who spoke with the Five Elders, not Shanks. This all makes perfect sense, and it seems Oda is heading in that direction, but we'll have to wait a little longer for Chapter 1086 to confirm some of these theories.
