Synopsis

Monsters and strange creatures rule the terrestrial world. Humans are persecuted and on the brink of extinction. One day, a forest guardian named Golem meets a lonely human girl named Somali. A human whose race is dying out and a Golem who protects the forest. This unlikely duo forms a strong bond as they travel the world together.

Background

Somali and the Forest Spirit began as a fantasy manga by Yako Gureishi that has been serialized on Tokuma Shoten's manga website Webcomic Zenyon since April 2015. Five collected tankobon volumes have been published so far.

An anime adaptation was announced in March 2019. It is directed by Kenji Yasuda at Satelight with series composition by Mariko Mochizuki and character designs by Ikuko Ito. Naotaro Moriyama performs the opening theme song, "Arigato wa Kocchi no Kotoba," and Inori Minase performs the ending theme song, "Kokoro Somali."

The anime was originally scheduled to air during the fall 2019 season, but was delayed until January 2020. It will be available internationally via Crunchyroll.

Characters

Somali (Voice of: Inori Minase)

Somali is a young girl who travels with Golem and hides the fact that she is human. She has an innate curiosity and enjoys finding interesting things. She loves to eat.

Golem (Voiced by: Daisuke Ono)

Golem exists to protect the forest. He cares for Somali as if he were her "father." He continues to travel in search of Somali's true parents.

Shizuno (Voice of: Hiroki Nanami)

Shizuno is an elf and trained doctor who can make medicine from ingredients found in the natural environment. He is intelligent and has a mischievous personality.

Yabashira (Voice of: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Yabashira is a demon and Shizuno's assistant. He is good at making sweets. He always has his hands full with Shizuno not cleaning up after him.

Uzoi (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)

Uzoi is a harpy. She travels with Haitora in search of medicine. She suggests that Somali and the others travel with her and Haitora across the desert.

Haitora (Voiced by: Yuki Ono)

Haitora comes from a breed of birds called Falcohol. He travels in search of medicine to cure an illness. He also cares for and protects Uzoi.

Kikila (Voice of: Yu Kobayashi)

Kikila comes from a race of fluffy creatures called Shurigala. Somali is her first friend.
