Natsuki Subaru is the main protagonist of the Re:Zero series . He has short black hair and brown eyes. He usually wears a tracksuit, though he has worn different outfits for various reasons, such as when he worked as a butler at the Mathers Mansion. Subaru speaks very informally and has little regard for position or circumstance, often speaking his mind to everyone around him. He has a brash attitude and is known to act without fully thinking things through, especially when it comes to life-or-death situations, as he greatly fears Return by Death . Over time, his encounters with death have strengthened his resolve to become someone capable of saving those he cares about. As his skills have grown, so has his confidence to act and face terrifying enemies that are beyond his control.

History

From a young age, Subaru idolized his father. Natsuki Kenichi Subaru was a well-liked and highly talented person in his community. He greatly emulated his father's mannerisms, bravado, and exuberant personality. Although Subaru excelled early on, he eventually reached the limits of his abilities and became more like the average person around him, which caused him to spiral into self-doubt and depression when he realized he wasn't anything special.

Relationships

Emilia - Subaru is Emilia's knight and devoted himself to her shortly after meeting her, vowing to protect her no matter how many times he must die. Emilia doesn't share these feelings at first, but after seeing Subaru continually struggle and fight for her, she begins to show feelings for him.
Rem - At first, Rem treated Subaru antagonistically, as she believed he was a threat to Emilia. This changed, however, as she began to take an interest in him after working together during Arc 2. She confesses her love for him during Arc 3 and suggests they elope. Subaru declines, stating that he is devoted to Emilia, but Rem is second only to her. After Arc 3, Subaru is determined to wake Rem from her coma, believing that Rem would want him to continue fighting, instead of being heartbroken by his condition.
Aries - Ram and Subaru are good friends, with Ram being the first person to dispel any suspicions of spying on his part early on in his stay at Mathers Manor. Ram trusts Subaru's judgment, even if the outcome of the scenario seems unlikely.
Beatrice - At first, Beatrice was quite hostile towards Subaru, as she found him annoying and often made fun of him. Subaru often relied on Beatrice for help with magic and turned to her to cure the curses he was afflicted with during Arc 2. Subaru entered into a spirit contract with her, after which she began to act more friendly towards him.
Roswaal L Mathers - Roswaal and Subaru seemed to get along well from their first meeting, but Roswaal didn't fully trust Subaru and didn't hesitate to blame him for Rem's sudden death. Their relationship changed drastically during Arc 4, when Roswaal decided to use Subaru's power. Return by Death. The ability to revive Echidna is revealed, leading Subaru to view Roswaal as an enemy. After the conclusion of Arc 4, Subaru became more tolerant of Roswaal, after Roswaal agreed to help him and Emilia.
Felt - Subaru saved Felt from being killed by Elsa in Lugnica Town, after which they became friends. Felt is very grateful to Subaru for this, and from Arc 5 onwards, she refers to him as her big brother (niichan).
Reinhard van Astrea - Reinhard and Subaru are friendly towards each other, with Subaru even boasting to the Sin Witches that he personally knows the current Sword Saint.
Satella - Satella has an obsessive love for Subaru and gave him the Return by Death . He was therefore able to kill her. Although Subaru does not love her, he refuses to kill her and instead vows to save her.
Crusch's Carcasses - Crusch initially had a very low opinion of Subaru, seeing him as a reckless assistant to Emilia who didn't know his place. She grew closer to him after fighting the Hakugei together, going so far as to give him most of the credit for the battle's success. Their relationship became neutral after her memories were eaten by Ley. However, their friendship reformed after Subaru unwittingly saved her from death by Chapelle 's Dragon Vein Poison.
Julius Juukulius - Julius initially disliked Subaru upon their first meeting as he believed Subaru didn't know his place. However, Julius's feelings towards Subaru changed after their fight against the Hakugei, after which he apologized to Subaru for how he treated him during their first meeting. Julius became close to Subaru during the planning and attack on the Witch Cult, and Julius began to consider Subaru a friend.
Echidna - Echidna has shown interest in Subaru Return by Death . She wants to use him for her experiments. She attempted to make a contract with Subaru to use his ability, but he declined, knowing that she wanted to manipulate him.

SKILLS

Return by Death - Subaru returns to a "save point" beyond his control after his death. This is given to him by Satella, and he is said to smell like a witch after activating this ability. Attempting to reveal this power to anyone results in certain penalties. First, Satella's power—the Witch's Hand—expands and attempts to silence him by threatening his life. Overcoming this fear, Satella attempts to kill the person he tells instead. Finally, attempting to do so also increases the density of the Witch Factor around him, amplifying the Witch's scent. One side effect of this is that he attracts all Demonic Beasts in his vicinity.
Authority - Subaru appears to absorb the authorities of the Archbishops of Sin who die around him. He currently has the Authority of Sloth and a much weaker version of Petelgeuse's The Invisible Hand, as well as Regulus ' Authority of Greed and a resulting ability called Cor Leonis, which allows Subaru to endure physical or mental exertion on behalf of someone else.
Magic User - Subaru was a practitioner of Yin magic before damaging his gate and being able to use the Shamak None spell.
Spirit User - Subaru has an innate ability to form spirit contracts. He is currently under contract with the artificial spirit Beatrice, which requires him to meet several conditions:

• Subaru cannot make contracts with other spirits
• Beatrice cannot restore mana on her own or use mana from the atmosphere (due to her nature as an artificial spirit).
• Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru (which helps her body regulate mana now that her gate is damaged)

Spiritual Arts - Through his contract with Beatrice, Subaru is able to use a number of special abilities:

• E・M・M, translated from Japanese as "Emilia-tan is truly a goddess," is an "absolute defense magic" in which Beatrice uses Yin magic to distort time and space around Subaru. While he cannot move while it is active, he also cannot be affected by anything outside the barrier. It works similarly to Authority of Greed but does not carry the same risk and can be used until his mana runs out.
• E・M・T translated from Japanese as "Emilia-tan is truly an angel" is an "absolute negation magic" that cancels all mana-based effects in a sphere centered around Subaru and Beatrice.

Parkour - Subaru trained to learn the basics with Clind.

Subaru also uses a whip created from a demonic beast that he named Guiltywhip.
