The Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica - Re:Zero
The Kingdom of Lugnica, also known as the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica, is the central nation of the world of Re:Zero, and where most of the story takes place. The Kingdom of Lugnica was a monarchy, ruled by the Lugnica royal family until the entire lineage fell victim to a mysterious illness. Today, the nation is ruled by a transitional government, which has caused civil unrest among the population.
GEOGRAPHY
The Kingdom of Lugnica lies on the eastern coast of the continent, surrounded by the other three main nations. Kararagi lies to the west, Vollachia to the south, and Gusteko lies along the northern border.
The royal capital is the city of Lugnica, which is divided into five districts that form a structure similar to that of feudal Japan. The first district is composed of royalty; the second district is filled with nobility and the incredibly wealthy. The third tier is made up of individuals dedicated to commercial and economic prosperity and artisans. The fourth tier is for the common people in general, while the fifth tier is literally called the poor quarter, filled with vagrants and the poor.
The Kingdom of Lugnica is a diverse region that includes mountain ranges surrounding the capital city, while also being large enough to support vast deserts and even climates conducive to lush forests. The expansive environments and climates suggest that the Kingdom is rather large, but most characters in the world of Re:Zero simply travel on foot.
POPULATION
The Kingdom of Lugnica has approximately 50 million citizens, which was mentioned in the web novel Re:Zero . For comparison with the real world, Japan reached a population of 50 million in 1909, making the Kingdom of Lugnica a nation far larger than any real-world medieval nation.
The town of Lugnica has a population of 300,000, while each of the country's five regional capitals has around 200,000. There are also numerous smaller villages and towns spread across the country's rural areas.
The population is predominantly human, but there are many races spread throughout the country. There is a fairly large demi-human population, which often leads to conflicts between the two races. Most demi-humans are found in the eastern regions of the country. There are also several elves and half-elves scattered throughout the various villages.
GOVERNMENT
The Kingdom of Lugnica is also known as the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica, due to the alliance between the monarchy and the dragon residing there. With the death of the royal family, a transitional government led by the Council of Elders oversees the nation.
RELIGION
The Kingdom of Lugnica worships the Dragon, and has done so ever since the royal family of Lugnica entered into an alliance with the Dragon centuries ago. Almost every corner of Lugnica is touched by the image of the Dragon, which is interesting because the Dragon withdraws from the royal image. Other important roles are the first Sword Saint and the Sages who serve the kingdom.
The witch cult has become an active minority within the kingdom's religious circles. Although many people practice witch cult beliefs within the kingdom's borders, it is much more popular in neighboring nations. The cult is rather secretive by nature, so little is known about its specific practices.
ECONOMY
There are four denominations of coins accepted throughout the Kingdom of Lugnica. From smallest to largest, they are:
Copper coin - image of the Royal Castle
Silver coin - image of the Sage
Gold coin - image of the first Sword Saint
Sacred gold coin - image of the Dragon
Craftsmanship is considered an important factor in the economic growth of the Kingdom of Lugnica, as evidenced by its impressive architecture, iron products, and mana stones. Given the diverse climate, the agricultural industry is also said to be healthy and robust, producing diverse products such as lemons, sugar, pepper, and fruit.
Since the royal family's demise, the country has experienced an unstable economic situation in recent years, creating tensions among the population. The Great Famine further increased stress, and citizens became unstable and distressed.
