Directed by the genius manga artist Sui Ishida, is a seinen horror and supernatural series currently running in Weekly Young Jump. If the name rings a bell, it's because Ishida-sensei is also the creator of the very popular .
When childhood friends Tokio and Azuma are attacked by a superhuman mutant, a "choujin," they find a way to escape death by injecting themselves with a liquid that can transform them into choujins themselves.
Tokio, who has been overshadowed by his talented best friend for too long, finally has a chance to shine. But having superhuman abilities isn't all that when you don't know how to control them. How will he master his powers while hiding his true self from others?
If you're familiar with Ishida-sensei, you know how talented he is at writing characters and giving them depth. Choujin X has no shortage of incredible characters who seem not only heroic but also real. Today, we're ranking the 15 best main characters in Choujin X.
Since we'll be adding characters from later chapters, a spoiler warning is in order before we begin.
Top 15 Main Characters of Choujin X Ranked
15. Chandra Hume
The first villain introduced in the series, Chandra Hume, is the choujin who infected Ely with her powers. He appeared at the very beginning of the series, planning to crash the plane Ely was on, but she saved everyone instead. Chandra is known as the Smoke Choujin.
Chandra has an uncanny sense of humor and is always wondering if his actions are "beautiful" or not. After Ely completely absorbed his powers, he was unable to use his smoke and became a waiter at a ramen restaurant.
14. Nari Tsumiji
Nari Tsumiji was one of the first lackeys hired by Batista to target Tokyo, even before he knew Yamato Mori. She is the White Snake's Choujin.
Nari is quite strong and seems to enjoy toying with her victims before devouring them. She was apprehended by Yamato Mori and interrogated by Sato, but later escaped and joined Batista on Zora's mission.
13. Caribol 16
Recently introduced, Caribol 16 is the guardian of Zora's poppy fields in Daizo. He is a golem master and commands all the golems that tend the fields. Zora enjoys absolute loyalty.
Caribol 16 is proud of the fact that his ancestors served Sora herself. Despite being constantly stuck in a state of chaos, he has never stopped serving Zora and takes his job as guardian very seriously. After being captured by Tokio and Ely, he now serves under Yamato Mori.
12. Noh Mask/Batista Hoshi
Noh Mask is a major player in the series. A devoted follower of Zora, he was introduced as an entity shrouded in mystery who possessed a mysterious liquid that could inspire someone to become a choujin. It was later revealed that he was once Batista Hoshi, Sandek's younger brother.
Currently, Batista's face is a strange amalgamation of different patches of skin sewn in the wrong places, which may explain why he covers it with a Noh mask. It is unknown how he met Zora and left Yamato Mori, but he is dedicated to finding Zora the choujin she seeks.
11. Chojin X
Choujin X is not a single character, but rather the name given to the choujin born in each generation with power over the entire world. If they are virtuous, they can be a beacon of hope for the people, but if they are evil, even God cannot save the people from their impending calamity.
Three Choujin Xs have been mentioned in the series. Bill Morth, the Immortal Emperor, ruled Morth 2,000 years ago. He shared his blood with his people, making him immortal. Palma inherited his power.
Quiem McMann was the Choujin President of Guelta. Although he had a brilliant mind, he was ruthless and evil, killing civilians recklessly. He was killed by Sora and Antitise.
Sora Siruha became the next Choujin X and was dubbed the Divine Beast and Hero. Although she started with good intentions, establishing Yamto Mori in the process, she became warped after seeing his prophecy of the dark calamity.
It is heavily implied that either Tokio or Azuma will be the next Choujin X.
10. Sora Siruha (Zora)
Formerly the leader of Yamato Mori, Sora Siruha is currently the main antagonist of the series. She is known as the Holy Mother Zora to all the other choujin who follow her and is responsible for Azuma and Tokio's choujin powers.
It was Sora who established Yamato Mori against Quiem's atrocities in the past, but it seems her sense of justice has been warped after decades of delusion. She went so far as to kill her former comrade, Antitise, and has no qualms about causing destruction to prevent her prophecy of "dark calamity."
9. Tsukiko Mado
Tsukiko Mado is the current headmistress of Yamato Mori. She is known as Nightmare Choujin.
Sora was once Tsukiko's mentor, a fact Tsukiko was extremely proud of, but this quickly changed when Sora began wreaking havoc with his illusions. Tsukiko also awakened her powers of foresight. However, the future she saw was very different from Sora's when the other Yamato Mori leaders cut Sora off.
8. Ichiro Sato
Hoshi Sandek's greatest protégé, Ichiro Sato, is a guardian of Yamato Mori. His choujin ability, "Psycho Stare," allows him to send any image he wants directly into the brains of others, which is why he often interrogates the choujins apprehended by Yamato Mori.
Ichiro took Tokio in and trained him in Iwato for a year. He's quite harsh towards Tokio, but that's why Tokio has been able to develop so much in such a short time. However, his character is difficult to interpret because at times, it almost seems like he doesn't care what happens to Tokio.
7. Simon Kagomura
Simon Kagomura is a 17-year-old guardian. He is one of the first choujins Ely and Tokio met in Yamato Mori. He is part of the Kagomura clan and is a special Sword Choujin.
Simon initially comes across as intimidating and cold, especially towards Azuma, but reveals his warm and friendly nature during training on Beast Island. He helps Tokio learn to fly and partially bestify himself.
6. Maiko Momoma
Another 17-year-old guard at Yamato Mori, Maiko Momoma, often works with Simon. She was the other choujin Ely and Tokio met early on. Tokio seems to like her.
Maiko is a super-powered choujin and can wield at least 100 times the muscular strength of an ordinary human. She has a quick wit and knows how to manipulate a situation to her advantage. Unlike other choujin, she inherited her choujin powers entirely from her father.
Without Momoma, Azuma and Tokio might not be able to resolve their conflict.
5. Hoshi Sandek
Hoshi Sandek is the Choujin Protector of Yamato Prefecture and one of the main leaders of Yamato Mori. He is kind and diligent and immediately took Ely in when he found her after she awakened her powers.
Hoshi is the image of a solid wall for Yamato, but it seems that even he has his regrets, mainly his younger brother Batista, who now serves Zora. Despite this, he didn't hesitate to fight him for even a second when they met in the tower.
4. Palma Shishinegura
Palm Shishinegura is a zombie-making choujin who worked in the old market of Minami City. His deep desire to bring the dead back to life after the destruction of his homeland is what awakened his choujin powers. Noh Mask took advantage of his beliefs and was able to improve his XEMBER serum with his help.
After Tokio saved her, Palma readily gave all the information to Yamato Mori. She also helped Tokio locate the poppy fields. It seems she wants to work for Yamato Mori to thank Tokio.
3. Ely Otta
The final three spots must be filled by our main trio. Ely Otta is a teenager who came to Yamato to participate in a produce competition. After being infected by Chandra's powers, she became the choujin Smoke.
Ely is a friendly, optimistic, and determined person. She quickly bonded with Tokio and has become a close friend to him since their first meeting. She is also unique in that she can not only perfectly wield her smoke, but also absorb and "harvest" the powers of other choujin.
After Tokio left for Iwato, she became close to Azuma, and the two often team up for missions.
2. Azuma Higashi
Presented as Tokyo's perfect best friend, Azuma Higashi is one of the protagonists of the series. Always excelling at everything, he has always been Tokyo's hero. His desire to always be Tokyo's hero and his insecurities have turned into severe atychiphobia. Even his choujin form reflects this.
Azuma lacks self-control as a choujin, which is why he was personally trained by Hoshi. He tries his best but can sometimes let his impulses get the better of him. He resented Tokio for running away to Iwato without telling them, which was eventually resolved by a fight.
Azuma has a secret crush on Ely. Only Tokio knows about it at the moment.
1.Tokio Kurohara
Portrayed as the skinny kid always lagging behind in his best friend's shadow, Tokio Kurahara is the main protagonist of the series. However, Tokio turned out to be much more than he was given credit for.
After the events of the first chapter, Tokio has become the Beastly Choujin. His Choujin takes the form of a vulture, likely due to the impact the bird had on him as a child. He used to be gentle and cowardly but decided to change after becoming a Choujin. He may appear laid-back, but he is surprisingly strong in his beliefs.
Training with Sato has made him incredibly strong, and he can now hold his own against (or even surpass) Azuma in terms of power.
And that brings us to a conclusion! Choujin X seems to be in his final arc right now, but knowing Ishida-sensei, you never know what the future holds.
