Trunks - Dragon Ball
Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma. He appears in the series in two forms, his teenage future form (often referred to as Future Trunks) and his child form. He is usually depicted with blue or purple hair and a sword (Future). He is voiced by Takeshi Kusao as both a child and an adult in all forms of the Japanese series.
Appearances in Dragon Ball Z
Trunks first appears in Dragon Ball Z as a baby in the Cell Saga carried by Bulma on his way to meet the Z Fighters. Assuming he is Yamcha , everyone is surprised to discover that Vegeta is the father. Despite this, Trunks cries whenever Vegeta approaches. Later, after Cell's defeat, Trunks is seen pulling Future Trunks' hair, much to the amusement of everyone except Future Trunks.
During the Buu Saga, Trunks is now 8 years old and trains with Vegeta in the gravity chamber. Much to Vetega's surprise, the young half-Saiyan is able to transform into a Super Saiyan . Trunks joins the Junior Division of the upcoming World Tournament, where he effortlessly reaches the final round and defeats his best friend, Son Goten . As the two were unhappy with the Junior Division, they disguise themselves as Might Mask and enter the Adult Division, though they are quickly disqualified. After learning about Majin Buu, the duo heads to the battlefield with Videl . Seeing his father fighting a losing battle, Trunks intervenes to distract the powerful Majin Buu. Vegeta decides to use his Self-Destruct Breath, giving Trunks a hug and sharing his first-ever heartfelt moment before sending Trunks and Goten away.
While searching for Kami, Trunks learns of his father's death and vows to avenge him. After learning the fusion dance from Goku and Piccolo, they eventually perfect the dance and become Gotenks. The fused fighter proves incredibly powerful, but loses to the incredible Super Buu. The boys return to the time chamber to train some more before Buu comes to fight again. When Buu enters the time chamber, the boys manage to fuse but are still not strong enough to defeat the overwhelming Buu. Gotenks devises a plan to distract Buu to give Piccolo enough time to destroy the chamber's entrance. Frustrated, Buu manages to escape and eats the remaining people outside as Kami watches. Gotenks also escapes the time chamber using his new Super Saiyan 3 powers and, after seeing everyone eaten, explodes in a fit of rage. Just before defeating Majin Buu, Gotenks defuses and Gohan appears in his Mystic Form to save the day. Unfortunately, Buu absorbs Gotenks and the other fighters. When the boys are freed by Goku and Vegeta, they are killed along with everyone else when Kid Buu destroys Earth. Trunks is resurrected using the Namekian Dragon Balls and helps energize Goku's Spirit Bomb.
Appearances in Dragon Ball Super
In Dragon Ball Super , at Bulma's birthday party, Trunks and Goten fuse to form Gotenks again in a futile effort to confront the powerful Beerus . Gotenks, even in his Super Saiyan 3 form, is quickly knocked into the sea by a physically unfazed and slightly agitated Beerus. Trunks is also seen going Super Saiyan among the group of Saiyans involved in helping Goku achieve the goal. Super Saiyan God Trunks can also be seen cheering on the Universe 6 tournament, but does not engage in combat. He and Goten have a brief fight with a shape-shifting liquid enemy that takes the form of Vegeta to become Copy Vegeta. They manage to hold their own against Copy Vegeta for a short time before being outclassed and saved by Goku. As the Tournament of Power begins, Trunks and Goten are taken to Monster Island with Marron by Android 17 (the local ranger) to protect the local animals from poachers. They were unaware, however, that Android 17 had forgotten to warn them about the presence of the Cell Juniors, who also inhabit the island.
Appearances in Dragon Ball GT
In Dragon Ball GT, the story takes place in the future. Trunks is the president of the Capsule Corporation, but hates the responsibilities of his job, often escaping from his office through the window. Vegeta asks Trunks to go into space with Pan and Goku in search of the Black Star Dragon Balls to prevent the destruction of Earth. They first crash-land on a planet and begin searching for parts to repair their ship, but get caught up in helping the locals fight against their cruel ruling dictator. Trunks is later possessed by Baby, but is eventually cured.
Powers and abilities
Trunks possesses all the usual powers, including superhuman strength, superhuman speed, and supersonic flight. Despite being of Saiyan origin, he is never seen with a tail.
Some of its most used techniques and transformations are:
- Double Buster - Trunks' signature attack. After spreading his hands, he charges energy and fires a yellow beam from his palms.
- Kamehameha - Trunks is shown using the Kamehameha with Goku and Pan in GT.
- Fusion Dance - He can use the fusion dance with Goten to form the powerful Gotenks.
Family
The trunks of the future
Much like his younger counterpart, Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma. He comes from a future timeline where Goku dies of a heart condition and the androids kill everyone except him and Gohan. He travels to the main timeline to prevent the future he knows from happening and to find a way to kill the androids in his own timeline. He is usually seen wearing a denim jacket and a black vest with baggy black pants and yellow boots. Future Trunks also uses a sword he received from "someone close to him."
Trunks first appears just before Mecha-Frieza and King Cold's return. When Mecha-Frieza appears on Earth, Trunks quickly defeats his soldiers and proceeds to humiliate him, chopping him into pieces, and detonating the remains. He then quickly finishes off King Cold and awaits Goku's arrival. However, after Gohan defeats Cell, Future Trunks returns to his original timeline.
Future Trunks returns once again to the main timeline during the events of Dragon Ball Super to warn them of a new enemy, Goku Black, a Goku from an alternate universe possessed by the evil Zamasu. He recruits the fighters and takes them to the future, though they fail to defeat the enemy. After several failed attempts, however, the group succeeds in defeating Goku Black, despite Zamasu being immortal.
