Luffy's childhood is a common topic among One Piece fans, who often discuss how Luffy became a pirate, given that his grandfather is a Marine while his father is the leader of the Revolutionary Army. His father was absent from his life, while his grandfather abandoned him relatively quickly. So, who raised Luffy as a child? Luffy's childhood was a great adventure in Foosha
Luffy was born in Foosha. Ten years before the beginning of the story, the Red Pirates, led by Shanks, landed in his village, with whom Luffy soon became friends. In fact, thanks to them, he began to cultivate the dream of becoming a pirate, so much so that he repeatedly asked the captain if he could sail with him. He told Shanks about his dream, and Shanks burst out laughing.
To impress the crew and show he was ready to take on the pirate life, he stabbed himself under his left eye, leaving a scar. Later, while at Makino's inn with Shanks and his crew, Luffy unknowingly ate a Devil Fruit, which turned his body into rubber and deprived him of his ability to swim. Shortly after, he was captured by Higuma, with whom he had previously fallen out because the bandit dared to mock the Red Pirates.
As Luffy was being beaten by Higuma, Shanks and his crew arrived to save him, easily defeating all the other bandits. Given the situation, Higuma kidnapped Luffy, took him out to sea, and threw him into the sea, knowing he would drown due to ingesting a Devil Fruit. Moments later, the bandit was devoured by a Sea King, and just as Luffy was about to suffer the same fate, Shanks intervened and, at the cost of an arm, saved his life and made the Sea Monster escape with his Conqueror Haki.
On the day Shanks' crew left, Luffy promised Shanks that he would become the Pirate King, and Shanks gave him his straw hat, telling him that he should return it when he became the Pirate King. A great pirate. Since then, Luffy loves his hat so much that he doesn't let anyone touch it except his crewmates.
Later, his grandfather Garp took him to live on Mount Corbo and entrusted him to Dadan. There, Luffy met Ace, who immediately became hostile towards him. Despite this, Luffy tried to stay in his company by chasing him daily as he walked alone through the forest, a dangerous place filled with wild animals. More than three months later, the child managed to reach him and saw that he was in the company of Sabo, a boy who lived in the Gray Terminal, a mountain of trash outside the Goa Kingdom.
He then discovered that he and Ace were collecting treasure, and once he made his presence known, the two decided to kill him so that he could not reveal the treasure's location to anyone. As the two hesitated to do so, the voices of Polchemy and two other pirates from Bluejam's crew, who had been robbed earlier by Ace, interrupted them.
Luffy is then accidentally discovered by the pirates, and they take him to their hideout, where Polchemy tortures him with barbed gloves to make him tell the truth about who committed the robbery against his men.
The child survived the torture, and upon learning this, Ace and Sabo rushed to his defense. After this incident, Luffy explained to Ace that he wanted to befriend him because he had no one he could trust. From that moment on, he joined the group and became their friend. Over time, the three men became known in the city for their misdeeds. One day, while eating, Sabo pointed out that Luffy and Ace had D. in their names.
Sabo asked him if he wanted it too, calling him Sa D. Bo, which he didn't like. Later, Luffy and Ace realized that Sabo was hiding something, and so, Sabo decided to reveal to him that he was the son of a nobleman but had decided to live alone because he was disgusted by this world. Shortly after, the three exchanged cups of sake, becoming brothers.
He has no relationship with his father, a very comical relationship with his grandfather, and an equally hilarious relationship with Curly Dadan.
As you can see above, Luffy was pretty much left to his own devices as a child. He was initially raised by his grandfather, Garp, who entrusted him to the care of Curly Dadan. Now that you know the story, we'll quickly tell you what kind of relationship Luffy had with the two of them.
Even though the two love each other and know it, Luffy is terrified of his grandfather. This feeling arose when Luffy was little, and Garp subjected him to extreme tests to make him stronger and make him a good marine. However, meeting Shanks changed Luffy forever, and from that moment on, he decided to become a pirate when he grew up. As for Curly Dadan, she was a sort of adoptive mother to Luffy and Ace. Garp forced her to take care of the two children; otherwise, he would have had them all arrested. Dadan wasn't happy about this blackmail, and Luffy didn't like his group of mountain bandits either. Over time, however, they grew to love each other, and Dadan also rushed to save the two boys from Bluejam's clutches, while later, Luffy grew worried, fearing that the woman hadn't escaped the attack.
